About
The Großer Barmstein is the block of rock above Hallein, 850 metres high and from below hardly recognisable as a walking destination. The path goes through forest and over the last few metres across rock; at the top you stand on the rock and look down the Salzach valley. An hour and a half there and back, which still fits after work. In autumn the valley often lies under fog.

In autumn I go up when fog is lying below: then you stand above a white sea and only the peaks show. Sunset is the other good time, but pack a head torch, the descent over the rock is no fun in the dark. Take something to eat and stay up there.
Duration & difficulty
An hour and a half there and back, 2.6 kilometres and close to 190 metres of ascent. Moderate: the forest is easy, the last few metres over the rock need sure footing.
Best season
All year, best in autumn. In summer you get the clearest view and long evenings; when it's wet the rock up top turns slick.
Location & access
Directly above Hallein in the Salzach valley, around twenty minutes from Salzburg. By train to Hallein and on foot from there, or by car to the edge of town and park there.
