About
The Freisaalweg is a short path on the edge of town from which the fortress stands above the meadows. No climb, no traffic, meadows left and right, a few trees and benches in between. You're there and back in twenty minutes, so it's more a stroll after dinner than an outing. The Leopoldskroner Weiher is right next door and easy to add on.

I go in the late afternoon, when the sun sets behind the fortress. It stands dark against the light, and you don't need a good camera for that to look right. Afterwards I add the loop around the Leopoldskroner Weiher, which is a few minutes more and the view stays the same.
Duration & difficulty
Twenty minutes there and back, a good kilometre and practically flat. Pushchair, sandals, tired legs, none of it a problem.
Best season
All year. Best in spring and summer in the late afternoon, when the sun moves behind the fortress. In winter you need proper shoes.
Location & access
On the southern edge of Salzburg by the Akademieplatz, an easy walk from the old town. Bus lines 5 and 25 stop nearby, and there is parking right at the start.
