Park & garden
The Mirabellgarten lies next to Schloss Mirabell and is a baroque garden by the book: flower beds laid out in patterns, clipped hedges, sculptures, a big fountain in the middle. Plus the Zwergelgarten, the oldest of its kind in Europe, the hedge theatre and the orangery. Entry costs nothing and the garden is open all year. The Do-Re-Mi scene from Sound of Music was filmed here.

I come early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the garden is empty; in between, half the city is standing in front of the fountain. In the evening the big fountain is lit, and that's the best moment. Most people walk straight past the Zwergelgarten, and that's where the oddest figures stand.
An hour is enough for a walk round; with the Zwergelgarten, the hedge theatre and the orangery it easily turns into half a day. Flat and paved, no problem for a wheelchair or a pushchair.
Open all year. In spring and summer the beds are full, in autumn the trees light up, in winter you see the layout of the garden best.
On the right-bank side of the old town by Schloss Mirabell, ten minutes on foot from the Getreidegasse. Best by public transport, the garage next door is expensive.
