Church & cathedral
The cathedral has stood in the middle of the old town since the 17th century, and inside it is brighter and airier than the heavy facade suggests. Five organs are spread through the space, and at midday one of them is played. By the entrance stands the font in which Mozart was baptised. Hardly anyone goes down to the crypt, where modern art installations sit inside the old walls. The square in front is one of the few in the old town with real air around it.

Local from Salzburg
For photos I stand in the cathedral arches, from there the arches frame the facade and the square looks less packed. Inside I look up at the ceiling frescoes first and then head down to the crypt. Early in the morning or late in the afternoon you have the place almost to yourself.

Half an hour is enough for the nave, the crypt and a few photos under the arches. Step-free apart from the crypt, which you reach down a staircase.
Open all year and the coolest address in the old town in summer. It's most pleasant early in the morning and in spring, before everything outside fills up.
In the middle of the old town on the Domplatz, between the Residenz and the Kapitelplatz. Best on foot or by public transport, parking around it is expensive and limited.
