About
Hohensalzburg Fortress has stood above the old town since the 11th century and is one of the largest surviving castles in Europe. Inside, museums and exhibitions take you through medieval life; outside, you walk the bastions all the way round and look over the city as far as the mountains. You get up by funicular or on foot along the path, which is a steep pull.

I go up early in the morning, when the courtyard is almost empty. And when the museums close you don't have to head straight down: you can stay on the bastions and take the sunset over the city with you. On foot it's short, and you save yourself the queue at the funicular.
Duration & difficulty
An hour is enough for the courtyard and the bastions. If you take in the museums and a guided tour, you're up there two to three hours. Easy: the lift takes you all the way up, only the footpath is steep.
Best season
Open all year. From May to October the full programme runs, in winter there's less going on and the castle in the snow has something too.
Location & access
Above the old town, on foot up from the Kapitelplatz or with the funicular from the Festungsgasse. Public transport into the centre and then up; down here it gets expensive for cars.
