The Piazza Cavalli sits on the Platzl, where the Linzergasse begins, and it comes in two parts: the bar downstairs, the restaurant upstairs. The cooking is modern Italian, with a lot of pasta and fresh fish, and the room looks like somebody thought about it for a long time. In summer you sit in the garden, in winter it gets loud and lively inside.

Book for late in the evening, that is when the mood is best. I start downstairs at the bar with a signature cocktail and go up to eat afterwards. The Maccheroni alle Vongole with pistachio are the best thing on the menu. If there are several of you, order the Pesce Crudo on the tiered stand for the middle of the table.

Modern Italian with a dinner club streak: pasta, fresh fish, inventive dolci. Plus a bar that works without dinner.
Price level
Mains run between eighteen and thirty-five euros, so upper middle. For the quality and the spot on the Platzl that is fair.
Location & access
Platzl 2 at the entrance to the Linzergasse, on the right-bank side of the old town. From the old town it is two minutes on foot over the Staatsbrücke.
