About
The Schmittenhöhe is the mountain above Zell am See, and walking up is a proper outing: eight kilometres, around 1300 metres of ascent, half a day. First through forest, then across alpine pastures, and from the top the Zeller See lies below you and the Hohe Tauern stand opposite. The Franzl Hütte waits at the summit. If you don't want to climb, take the cable car and get the same view.

At the Franzl Hütte I always take the Wiener Schnitzel, up there it is the best decision of the day. And I plan so that I definitely catch the last ride down. Walking all of it down again after six hours of climbing is really no fun for anyone.
Duration & difficulty
A good six hours for the climb, eight kilometres and around 1300 metres of ascent. You need the stamina, technically the path is unproblematic. You come back down by cable car.
Best season
Spring to autumn, most reliably June to September. That is when the paths are free of snow and the days are long enough.
Location & access
Valley station in the middle of Zell am See, on foot from the station or with the local bus. There is plenty of parking at the cable car.
