About
The Schafberg rises above St. Wolfgang at 1,783 metres, and from the top you see half the Salzkammergut at once: Wolfgangsee, Mondsee, Attersee and the mountains behind them. On foot it is a long day, a good ten hours there and back and 1,250 metres of ascent. Most people take the historic Schafbergbahn, which runs up in forty minutes. The view up there is the same.

If you can add a night: the Hotel Schafbergspitze is up on top. The last train takes everyone down to the valley, and after that you have the summit to yourself and a handful of others, sunset and sunrise included. There is also a short path from the summit over to the Spinnerin, which hardly anyone walks.
Duration & difficulty
A good ten hours there and back, 16 kilometres and 1,250 metres of ascent. Moderate, technically manageable, but a full day. By train the ride takes forty minutes.
Best season
May to October, as long as the train runs and the paths are free of snow. On clear days you see furthest from up there.
Location & access
Above St. Wolfgang on the Wolfgangsee, around an hour from Salzburg by car. The valley station of the Schafbergbahn is right in the village, and the bus gets you there too.
