Mountain hike
The loop starts at the Arthurhaus high above Mühlbach am Hochkönig. It climbs over alpine meadows to the Spiegelsee, which is actually called Troiboden See and gets its nickname from what stands in it on a windless day: the whole Hochkönig face. If you want, add the summit cross on the Hochkeil. A good two and a half hours there and back, 300 metres of ascent, that's all it takes for this view.

I set off at first light so I'm up there for sunrise. The light sits on the peaks then and the lake is still mirror-flat, later in the day the wind ruffles it all away. Pack breakfast and eat it at the summit cross on the Hochkeil, that's worth the detour.
A good two and a half hours there and back, 5.2 kilometres and around 300 metres of ascent. Moderate, but it climbs evenly, so it works even if you rarely walk.
June to October, when the paths are free of snow and the weather is most settled. In late summer and early autumn the pastures are full of colour.
The Arthurhaus sits above Mühlbach am Hochkönig, about an hour from Salzburg by car. There is parking at the start, and a bus runs up regularly from Mühlbach.
