Themed trail
The Sound of Music Trail runs above Werfen, along exactly the places where parts of the film were shot. What carries the walk, though, is Burg Hohenwerfen, standing opposite you on its rock from halfway along. Along the way there are information boards and wooden loungers you end up staying on. Just under two hours there and back, a good 230 metres of ascent.

I start early, then the path is still in shade and you have the loungers to yourself. The boards along the way tell you about the filming, and you take that in even if you've never seen the film. Best thing is to lie down on one of the loungers opposite the castle and stay there a while.
Just under two hours there and back, 2.3 kilometres and a good 230 metres of ascent. Easy and well signposted, the climb is spread out.
Spring to autumn. In spring everything is green, in autumn you get the clearest view of the castle. In winter the path is slippery.
Above Werfen in the Salzach valley, about forty minutes from Salzburg on the A10. By train to Werfen and a few minutes on foot, and there's parking at the start.
