Castle & palace
Burg Hohenwerfen has stood on its rock above Werfen since the 11th century and was where the Salzburg archbishops withdrew to when things got tight down in the valley. Today you walk through the armoury, climb the tower and look far down the Salzach valley. The path up from below is short, but it's a steep pull.

Local from Salzburg
The falconry is the reason I keep going back. When the eagle banks over the castle courtyard, even the last person stops talking. I check when the display runs and time the tour so I'm up there before it.
Forty minutes for the walk up and back down, 1.7 kilometres. If you don't want to walk, take the lift. For the castle itself allow two to three hours.
April to early November, the castle is closed in winter. In the high season the full programme runs, and the falconry flies right through the season.
Above Werfen in the Salzach valley, around forty minutes from Salzburg. By train to Werfen, and from there on foot or by shuttle.
