About
The Bad Gastein waterfall drops 341 metres in three drops, and it does so straight through the middle of the village. Old grand hotels stand left and right, with bridges and steep lanes in between. In winter icicles hang in the rock and the spray sits over everything, and it's exactly this mix of gorge and town that gives Bad Gastein its look. A short stop between a day of skiing and the thermal baths.

For photos I come at the blue hour: first the sky still glows, then the lights come on in the hotels, and that works far better than midday. I set up on the old stone bridge or on the terraces above the falls and work with long exposures. The Wasserfallweg along the rock face is closed in winter, so stay on the cleared paths then.
Duration & difficulty
Thirty to sixty minutes, depending on how many viewpoints you take in. It's a town walk with a few steps and short steep bits, and in winter you want shoes with grip.
Best season
Winter, when ice and snow come with it. In summer the Wasserfallweg along the rock face is open, in winter it stays shut.
Location & access
In the middle of Bad Gastein between the grand hotels. From the station it's ten to fifteen minutes uphill into the centre, and by ski bus or car you're there in a few minutes.
