Thermal spa
The Alpentherme in Bad Hofgastein is the big, family-friendly one of the two Gastein thermal baths. Inside there are pools, saunas and a children's area with a current channel and an aquarium, outside there is thermal water under an open sky. In winter you sit in the warm pool and look at snow-covered mountains. If you want it quieter, the Felsentherme in Bad Gastein suits you better.

I turn up at opening time, the loungers at the panorama window are still free and it is genuinely quiet. On ski days I take the afternoon ticket and I'm in the outdoor pool at sunset. Otherwise the afternoon belongs to families, and the multimedia pool gets busy.
No trail and no ascent, you set the pace yourself. Two to three hours go by easily, and with the sauna it turns into half a day.
Open all year, but at its best in winter: sitting in the outdoor pool while it snows on you.
In the centre of Bad Hofgastein, a few minutes on foot from the station. Parking is right at the baths.
