Old town & alleys
Bad Gastein clings to the slope, and the waterfall crashes right through the middle of it. Around it stand the grand hotels of the Belle Époque, some freshly restored, some still empty. It's exactly this mix of old glamour and vacancy that makes the place. You walk from top to bottom in forty minutes, and the noise of the water is with you the whole time.

I come by train, the station sits right in the middle and you start straight away. I walk down along the waterfall and drop into the Gasteiner Museum in the old Grandhotel de l'Europe, which explains why half of Europe once came here to take the cure. Thermal water at the end.

Forty minutes for the walk through the village, 1.7 kilometres and a good 80 metres of ascent. It drops steeply and climbs again, so proper shoes beat sandals.
All year. In winter there is snow on the balconies of the old hotels, and that suits the place.
In the back of the Gasteinertal. The station is in the middle of the village, and by car it's a good hour and a half from Salzburg.
