About
The Postalm is the largest alpine pasture area in Austria, a wide, open plateau between Abtenau and Strobl. The Panoramastraße runs across it and charges a toll, and walks of every length start from the car parks along the way: one hour up to four, depending how far you go. To the Pitschenberg it is around two hours. If you would rather not walk, just drive the road and stop at the viewpoints.

I drive up in the early morning, at sunrise the light comes in flat over the pastures and nobody is there yet. At the weekend it fills up, midweek you have plenty of room up there. And stop at the Lienbachalm: pastries, Schweinsbraten to a family recipe, Wiener Schnitzel, all made in-house.
Duration & difficulty
The walks take between one and four hours, for the Pitschenberg count on two. Easy to moderate, gentle climbs and marked paths, sturdy shoes are enough.
Best season
May to October. In early summer the pastures are in flower, in autumn it turns colourful and empty, in winter the road can be closed.
Location & access
Between Abtenau and Strobl in the Tennengau, around an hour by car from Salzburg. There is a toll for the Panoramastraße, and car parks are signposted along the route.
