About
The Großglockner High Alpine Road runs for 48 kilometres and 36 hairpins through the Hohe Tauern National Park, at heights above 2,500 metres. At the end you stand at the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe and look at the Großglockner and the Pasterze. Along the way there are viewpoints, information centres and short walks. Without stops it's a good two hours; with everything on the way it turns into a day.

I set off early, then the hairpins are empty and the air is clear. The detour up to the Edelweißspitze is obligatory, from there you see over thirty peaks above three thousand metres at once. Marmots often sit by the roadside, so driving slowly pays off twice. The toll is steep, and the SalzburgerLand Card makes it cheaper.
Duration & difficulty
A good two hours of pure driving without stops; with viewpoints and breaks, half a day to a full day. The driving is easy, but the bends and the altitude demand concentration.
Best season
Open from early May to early November, most reliably June to September. In autumn the forests below turn colourful while there's often snow up top.
Location & access
It starts in Fusch an der Großglocknerstraße in the Pinzgau, around an hour and a half from Salzburg. By car or motorbike, there's no other way through here.
