About
The Hintersee sits at 1,313 metres in the Felbertal, with the Hohe Tauern all around. It was formed in 1495 by a rockfall, and it isn't big: 300 metres long, 200 wide. The path around it is flat and runs through forest, and on the north shore there's a small waterfall. Fifty minutes for the loop. If you want more, the high alpine tours start here, to the St. Pöltner Hütte for example.

I'm there early in the morning, when the water lies flat and the mountains are doubled in it. The small waterfall on the north shore is the spot most people walk straight past. Bring something to eat, you'll find a place anywhere along the shore.
Duration & difficulty
Fifty minutes for the loop around the lake, 2.3 kilometres and hardly any climb. Easy and well signposted. The tours that start here are a different matter.
Best season
Spring to autumn, when the water has the most colour. In winter there's snow on the path and the loop gets slippery.
Location & access
In the Felbertal behind Mittersill in the Pinzgau, about an hour and a half from Salzburg by car. The parking is just before the lake, and from there it's a few minutes on foot.
