About
At 2,467 metres the Gamskarkogel is said to be the highest grass mountain in Europe, and that is exactly how it walks: no rock, no scrambling, but close to 1,600 metres of ascent in one go. You start at the Hoteldorf Grüner Baum in Bad Gastein and climb via the Poserhöhe. At the summit stands the Gamskarkogelhütte, and from there you look all the way round over the Gasteinertal and the Tauern. There and back that's thirteen and a half hours, so a very long day on the mountain.

The hut serves Kaspressknödelsuppe, and after 1,600 metres of ascent it's the best soup of your life. The menu is small, you'll still be full. I set off at first light, because otherwise the day isn't long enough. If you don't want to take the same way back, descend the other side to Hüttschlag, but then the ride back has to be arranged.
Duration & difficulty
Thirteen and a half hours there and back, 14.7 kilometres and over 1,800 metres of ascent. Moderate, technically harmless, but you have to bring the stamina. Solid shoes and enough water.
Best season
June to September, when the paths are clear of snow. In autumn the forests around Bad Gastein light up, but the day gets short.
Location & access
Start at the Hoteldorf Grüner Baum above Bad Gastein. Straight there by car, or by train to Bad Gastein and from there by bus to the start.
