About
The Gaisberg is Salzburg's local mountain, and from the top the city lies completely at your feet: old town, fortress, and behind it the chain of the Berchtesgaden Alps. The loop at the summit is short and flat, and you walk it in just under an hour. In the late afternoon the paragliders queue up here, and in autumn you often look out over a sea of fog with only the peaks poking through.

I only drive up shortly before sunset, then the scramble for parking is over and the light is at its best anyway. Pack a blanket, there's always a breeze up top. If you'd rather earn the mountain: from Schloss Aigen it's a good two hours up, but then start really early.
Duration & difficulty
Just under an hour for the summit loop, flat and manageable with children too. The climb from Schloss Aigen is a tour of its own and takes a good two hours.
Best season
Spring to autumn, and best in autumn: the basin below you often lies in fog with only the peaks showing.
Location & access
Twelve kilometres east of the old town, around half an hour by car to the car park at the summit. Bus 151 goes all the way up.
