About
The Krimmler Wasserfälle are Austria's highest: 380 metres in three drops. The Wasserfallweg climbs right alongside them, with viewpoints at every level, and the further up you get the fewer people stand next to you. You'll get wet on the way anyhow, the spray hangs over the whole path. A good two hours there and back if you go all the way to the top.

Early in the morning or late in the afternoon is quietest, in between the coaches arrive. I always go up to the top drop, there's hardly anyone left there and the view of the mountains behind is the best one. Bring something to eat and find one of the quiet corners, there are enough of them up there.
Duration & difficulty
A good two hours there and back, 3.4 kilometres and around 260 metres of ascent. Moderate: well built, but steep in places and permanently wet from the spray.
Best season
May to October. Spring and early summer bring the most water down; in autumn there are fewer people and the forest has turned.
Location & access
At the end of the Oberpinzgau near Krimml, around two hours by car from Salzburg on the B165. The car parks are at the entrance, and the Postbus 670 goes straight to Krimml.
