About
The Tristkogel above Saalbach is a long loop: just under thirteen kilometres, a good 900 metres of ascent, seven and a half hours there and back. The path starts at the car park at the head of the valley and pulls up through alpine pasture. Shortly before the summit there's a small mountain lake that mirrors the peaks when there's no wind. At the top you see all the way round.

Start early, otherwise the day gets tight, this is a long loop. On the way I stop at the Ossmannalm, where there's a proper snack. At the small mountain lake shortly before the summit the photo stop is worth it, as long as the water is still. If you want the sunrise up there, you set off in the dark.
Duration & difficulty
Seven and a half hours there and back, 12.8 kilometres and a good 900 metres of ascent. Moderate: marked and with no technical sections, but a few steep passages and a long day.
Best season
June to September. That's when the alpine meadows are in flower and the weather is most reliable, and the days are long enough for the loop.
Location & access
At the head of the Saalbach valley in the Pinzgau, around an hour and a half by car from Salzburg. There's enough space at the car park, and a bus runs there regularly from Saalbach.
