About
The Felsentherme stands at 1,100 metres in the middle of Bad Gastein, with natural stone walls inside and a view of the Stubnerkogel. The thermal water comes from the Hohe Tauern. There's a lap pool, relax pools and a separate sauna area for over 16s, and the tone in the house is quiet to match. If you're after slides and a children's pool, the Alpentherme in Bad Hofgastein suits you better.

I turn up at nine, then the lap pool and the loungers are still free and you don't have to fight for anything. But it's at its best after skiing, in the outdoor pool at dusk, when the mountains go dark and the steam stands over the water. For real quiet I go into the sauna area for over 16s.
Duration & difficulty
Nothing sporty here, you stay as long as you like. Two to three hours go by easily, and with the sauna it turns into half a day. The heat and the altitude put a strain on your circulation, so cool down in between.
Best season
Open all year and at its best in winter: snow outside, you in the warm outdoor pool looking at the Stubnerkogel.
Location & access
Right by the Bad Gastein station and opposite the Stubnerkogelbahn. By train or ski bus you're there in a few minutes, and there is parking in front of the building.
