About
The Goldbergbahn takes you from Sportgastein up to 2,650 metres, into the highest ski area in the Ski amadé. Up there you find broad red pistes and long descents, plus the freeride routes Golden Powder, Golden Rush and Golden Ride. All around is the Hohe Tauern National Park. After fresh snow this is a different league from the rest of the valley, and in spring it turns to firn.

On powder days I take the first gondola and then go to the Freeride Info Base at the top station, where the conditions are announced and the avalanche transceiver is tested. Off the marked ski routes this is genuine high mountain terrain, and without equipment and experience nobody has any business there. When the föhn blows the slopes get unpleasant, and then I stay on the pistes and go to the thermal baths afterwards.
Duration & difficulty
For the Goldbergbahn and Sportgastein plan half a day to a full ski day, the gondola ride itself takes minutes. Pistes mostly red and high alpine, dependent on weather and avalanche conditions. Only partly suitable for beginners.
Best season
Winter, and the more snow the better. Sportgastein is high enough that it snows up here while it has long been raining down in the valley.
Location & access
Valley station in Sportgastein, behind Böckstein at the end of the Gasteinertal. The ski bus from Bad Gastein and Böckstein is free with a ski pass; by car you go over the toll Gasteiner Alpenstraße.
