Tavern
The Zirkelwirt sits on the Papagenoplatz in the Kaiviertel, in a building with almost 500 years of history. Inside it's rustic like an alpine hut, without coming across as dated. What lands on the plate is Austrian food the way it should be, and the portions are so big that one main course does for two.
Anton
Local from Salzburg
Booking is a must, the place is too popular with locals. On sunny days try to get a seat in the hidden garden. And share a main course, the Schnitzel and the Schweinsbraten are enormous. Then you've still got room for the Kaiserschmarrn, and that's the real reason to stay.
Austrian classics, done big: Schnitzel, Kasnocken, spinach dumplings, plus their own ideas like the Bratlburger. Hearty and freshly made.
Genuinely fair for the old town: most main courses run between fifteen and twenty euros, and the portions make up for that twice over.
Pfeifergasse 14 on the Papagenoplatz in the Kaiviertel, in the middle of the old town. Best on foot, and a good stop on the way down from the fortress.
